Cashton Cupboard & Closet
“Our goal is to serve our community and the basic needs of its people through collaboration, cooperation, advocacy, resource sharing, public awareness, and an ecumenical belief in God’s love and goodness.”
-
The Cashton Cupboard & Closet was established by three women in October 2009 in the Sacred Heart Church rectory, having evolved from the one-room Cashton Food Pantry at Sacred Heart School. It was open one afternoon each week, and initially served about five families.
-
With about 20 additional volunteers coming forward, a thrift store was added in 2009 to generate funds to help pay overhead costs. Food shelves were kept full by way of donations, Second Harvest Food Bank, Hunger Task Force and federal commodities.
-
A Board of Directors and an Operations Committee were formed in 2010 to oversee day-to-day operations with about 40 volunteers. By that time, the food pantry was serving more than 50 families.
-
In August 2011, the Cupboard & Closet moved to the Scenic Bluffs Health Center building in downtown Cashton, and the number of food pantry patrons grew to nearly 100 per month.
-
In 2012, the Cashton Cupboard & Closet officially attained 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation status.
-
In August that year – to accommodate growth of both the food pantry and the thrift store – the operation moved to its old location at 9785 Ogden Avenue.
-
About 60 volunteers now make it possible to be open five days each week to serve the more-than 140 families coming to the food pantry every month.
