Maple Bacon Avocado Grilled Cheese recipe from Cashton WI

Happy Grilled Cheese Day from Cashton Wisconsin! We are celebrating National Grilled Cheese Day (April 12th) by giving this pinnacle of crispy comfort food a Cashton-style makeover: local bacon, organic maple syrup, ultra melty cheese, and Amish-made bread come together with funky flair (thank you avocado!) for a sandwich like no other! Thanks to the abundance of locally produced food in Cashton, creative culinary adventures are never far off. Stay tuned for more Cashton-inspired recipes here on the blog.


Tips for making the best grilled cheese:

  • Pre-heat the pan to medium (an iron skillet works great!)

  • Butter one side of each slice of bread

  • Place one slice of bread in pan, buttered side down, put cheese on top and cover with remaining slice of bread, buttered side up

  • Turn down heat a notch, cook 2-4 minutes until golden

  • Flip and cook 2-4 minutes until golden

Maple Bacon Avocado Melt

Featuring: Maple Valley Cooperative's Organic Maple Syrup

  • 8 slices thick cut bacon (Organic Valley bacon is perfect for this)

  • 2oz Organic Maple Valley Syrup

  • 1 heavy pinch of cayenne pepper

  • Cooking Spray

  • 8 slices provolone cheese

  • 1 ripe avocado, 12 slices

  • 8 slices white or sourdough bread (our test version features gluten-free Amish white bread from Scenic View Bulk Foods & Bakery)

  • Butter for cooking

Maple Bacon:

  1. Mix maple syrup and cayenne in a small dish. You may find it helpful to heat it slightly

  2. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F

  3. Place a cookie cooling rack on top of a 9x13” (line the pan with tin foil), coat with cooking spray

  4. Paint the maple/cayenne glaze on both sides of bacon

  5. Bake for 35 min or until bacon is crispy

Sandwiches:

  1. Pre-heat the pan to medium (an iron skillet works great!)

  2. Butter one side of each slice of bread

  3. Place two pieces of bread, butter side down, into the pan.

  4. Layer 1 slice of provolone cheese, 3 slices of avocado, 2 slices of bacon, 1 more slice of cheese, and second piece of bread (butter side up)

  5. Turn down heat a notch, cook 2-4 minutes until golden

  6. Flip and cook 2-4 minutes until golden
